Project:
Survey and Control of the environmental deterioration of the polychrome sculpture: The Marlborough Pavilion, Chartwell, Kent

Client:
The National Trust

Situated in the gardens of Chartwell, Sir Winston Churchill's country house in Kent, the Marlborough Pavilion is a small sandstone and clunch structure, which is open on two sides. The interior of the building is embellished with slate wall plaques, figurative busts and a low relief painted slate frieze, portraying the battle of Marlborough, and which runs along the upper part of the walls.

Due principally to the exposed position of the Pavilion, the internal surfaces have been subject to deterioration from the period immediately after they were executed and regularly require cleaning and restoration. Tobit Curteis Associates was commissioned by the National Trust to undertake a detailed environmental study and monitoring as part of a multidisciplinary programme to design measures to reduce the rate and extent of the deterioration.

The results of the study enabled a winter enclosure to be designed which, in conjunction with mechanical dehumidification, allowed the conditions during the most dangerous period of the year to be controlled.
