Practice Profile

Tobit Curteis Associates is a practice specialising in the conservation of wall paintings and the investigation, monitoring and control of environmental causes of deterioration in historic buildings, both in the UK and abroad.

Our work with wall paintings and architectural polychromy involves the investigation and control of deterioration, as well as the treatment and long term conservation of damaged paintings. Within these fields we undertake extensive condition surveying, graphic recording, art historical research and materials analysis, as well as the provision of educational and presentation material. In addition, we provide services for museums and collections, both recording and conserving wall paintings.

Tobit Curteis Associates also specialises in the investigation and control of environmental causes of deterioration, both in historic buildings and museums collections. We undertake environmental surveys and monitoring of structures and materials, including building fabric, monuments, wall paintings, architectural polychromy, wooden structures, and stained glass. We also design historic building and collections monitoring systems and provide staff training.

The practice, which was formed in 1992, is lead by Tobit Curteis. Following a degree in the History of Art at Warwick University, Tobit Curteis undertook his postgraduate training in the conservation of wall paintings at the Courtauld Institute of Art, in conjunction with the Getty Conservation Institute. He subsequently worked in Florence and Rome gaining the Courtauld Institute of Art/ Getty Conservation Institute Certificate of Advanced Practical Training. Tobit Curteis is an accredited member of the Institute for Conservation and a fellow of the International Institute of Conservation. He works as a consultant for English Heritage and is the Advisor on Wall Paintings for the National Trust.
