Project:
Conservation of the Wall Paintings at St Mary's Church, Houghton-on-the-Hill, Norfolk

Client:
The Friends of St Mary's Church

The late 11th century wall paintings at Houghton-on-the-Hill are the earliest large scheme of mural decoration in the country and are one of the most important discoveries in the last two decades. Following an extensive programme of research and analysis, Tobit Curteis Associates was commissioned to undertake the conservation treatment.

Because numerous layers of later painting survived above the original scheme, the treatment programme, which was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Council for the Care of churches and The Friends of St Mary's Church, involved the stabilisation of the wall paintings "as found", rather than the removal of later layers.

However, extensive new painting was discovered beneath layers of dirt and microbiological growth and documentary research, undertaken during the course of the project, revealed important new information about the iconography and provenance of the paintings. The project poster is available on the download page.
