Project:
Uncovering and Conservation of the Wall Paintings at Ilketshall St Andrew, Suffolk
Client:
The PCC of St Andrew's Church
Evidence of wall paintings at Ilketshall St Andrew only become evident when plaster was removed during building work. The resulting programme of research revealed that beneath the plaster and limewash layers there was an extensive scheme of extremely unusual 12th and 13th century paintings. While for some areas, the best conservation approach was to leave the paintings covered, in other areas it was necessary to remove the overlying layers in order to stabilise them. Tobit Curteis Associates worked with the PCC in preparing the successful bid for Heritage Lottery Funding which allowed the extensive conservation to go ahead. During the course of the programme a remarkable 13th century Wheel of Fortune was discovered, one of only three examples known to exist in medieval wall painting. A key part of the project was the preparation of presentational and educational material for the church, including posters and brochures. The project poster is available on the download page. |
